I compiled a list of three holiday gift drives for my office, but why limit it to that setting? In case you’re looking to help someone out this holiday season, here are some avenues to do that:
Option 1: The Ali Forney Center
Mission Statement: Our Mission is to protect LGBTQ youths from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently.
Deadline: None given
- Gift cards in $10 denominations to four AFC approved vendors (McDonald’s and Old Navy for our Drop-in clients, and Starbucks and H&M for our shelter clients)
- New hats, gloves, and scarves
- New socks
- School supplies (notebooks, markers, etc)
You can drop them off at the center:
224 West 35th Street, 15th Floor
New York, NY 10001
Option 2: Winter Wonderland Toy Drive at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst:
Description: (The Winter Wonderland Toy Drive will be open through December 19, 2016) NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, a public hospital located in Queens, New York, is holding their annual Winter Wonderland Event, where families going through emotional, medical, and/or financial hardship are invited to “shop for gifts” that are donated to the Child Life Program. Please share your holiday spirit by donating a gift for our Winter Wonderland. Any help is always appreciated by the patients and families we work with. Thank you all so much and we wish you a happy holiday season and new year! If you have any questions, please contact: Jaclyn Gee, Coordinator of Child Life Services (718)334-5617 or GEEJ@nychhc.org
Deadline: December 19
Option 3: Coalition for the Homeless: 2016 Holiday Toy Drive for Homeless Children:
Description: The Coalition is collecting new, unwrapped toys for homeless kids. For these girls and boys, who have lost so much, receiving a special new toy during the holiday season can make all the difference in the world. Tonight a record 15,691 families — including 24,000 children — will sleep in an NYC homeless shelter. With your help, we can make this season a little brighter for thousands of homeless girls and boys!
If you follow this link, you’ll find a flyer that has toy suggestions by age group.
Deadline: December 15
Drop off your new, unwrapped toy at one of the following public drop-off locations:
- Coalition for the Homeless: 129 Fulton Street, New York, NY 10038
- The Albert Apartments: 23 East 10th Street New York, NY 10003
I haven’t decided which I’m going to do yet, though I’m sort of thinking I might do something a bit smaller for each of them instead of a larger thing to one.
